Opportunities
Typically, 19.
We are now looking to select trainees to join us in September 2027.
Yes, we have a virtual work experience programme, “An Introduction to Shipping Finance”, which is open to everybody and particularly suited to year 13 and 1st year undergraduate students.
We typically recruit 2 Solicitor Apprentices each year.
Eligibility and requirements
You can apply for the scheme once you’re in the penultimate year of your qualifying law degree or in the final year of your non-law degree (or beyond). While in your first year, you are welcome to complete our virtual work experience programme, “An Introduction to Shipping Finance,” and apply for one of our open days to find out more about our firm.
A wide range of degree disciplines are represented in the applications we receive. Typically, about half the trainees we take on each year won’t have studied law at university.
No. We understand that not everyone can take part in our vacation scheme so we don’t fill all our vacancies via this route. However, we encourage you to take part in our vacation scheme where possible as it provides the opportunity for you to learn more about us and decide if we are right for you, as well as providing us with the chance to meet you.
You are very welcome to apply to us again. However, if in a previous year you reached the assessment centre stage of the process, we won’t be able to consider an application.
We consider applications for our training contracts and vacation scheme side by side. That means that in the same year, you cannot make a new application for a training contract. You are welcome to apply in future years, so long as you have not previously made it to the assessment centre stage.
Yes, we accept applications from candidates with the LPC. If we offer you a training contract, however, you will need to undertake some further study (details to be confirmed at offer stage).
For trainees, we accept applications from candidates requiring work permits. For the solicitor apprenticeship programme, all applicants will need to have been a resident in the UK for at least 3 years and hold a settled status/visa which covers the full duration of the apprenticeship to be eligible.
As an international firm with an international client base, we certainly value such skills. However, speaking a second language is not a requirement. During your training contract, you will do at least one seat in an international office. We will provide language classes ahead of secondments if needed.
Our recruitment process
No. When we accept you for our vacation scheme, we automatically consider you for a training contract. You will be invited to a training contract interview towards the end of your vacation scheme.
To make our recruitment processes fully inclusive, we are committed to removing barriers to access. We can, for example, offer candidates with disabilities and/or long-term health conditions extra time for reading and writing, different formats or more time for interviews and/or guidance and support where appropriate. If you require adjustments at any stage of the process, we encourage you to get in touch with our Early Careers team who will be happy to discuss options.
We’ve made space on our application form for you to explain, briefly, your individual circumstances and how this relates to your academic achievements. We take the whole picture into account.
Yes. We use Rare’s contextual recruitment system to understand your academic achievement in context.
Many exams and assessments in 2020/21 took place under challenging circumstances. We’ll consider their impact and use contextual factors as we review your application. When you complete your form, please provide any details you think will assist us.

During my training
Our firm established flexible and agile working policies before the pandemic. In 2021, we launched new guidelines for agile working and we now ask all trainees to be present in the office at least three days per week. This allows you to benefit from informal learning opportunities and social interaction with colleagues. For two days per week, you may be able to work from home depending on the needs of clients and of the firm overall.
